We combined in situ infrared, in situ X-ray photoelectron, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopies to study the structural and electronic changes of cobalt oxide and promoted cobalt oxide catalysts during (preferential) CO oxidation, in order to understand the promotional effect, the nature of the active sites and the reaction pathways.
