The deoiled rice bran can be processed using ZnCl2 activation to obtain a very high surface area (~1400 m2/g) activated carbon (AC). This AC catalyst was employed for dehydrogenation and dehydration of ethanol to gain acetaldehyde and ethylene, respectively.  Ethanol conversion increased with increased reaction temperature, whereas acetaldehyde selectivity decreased.
