We use in situ site quantification techniques to show that oxygen modification of molybdenum carbide catalysts enables us to (i) reversibly change the rates of IPA dehydration (~30 fold) by manipulating the acid site density, and (ii) tune metallic/acidic functionality for hydrodeoxygenation of anisole to selectively produce benzene or phenol.
