Buildup of carbonaceous deposits (coke) in reactors and catalysts causes shutdowns, increasing costs. Industrial coke-catalyst contact is simulated in the laboratory by in-situ generation of radical coke on catalysts in a customized thermo-gravimetric analyzer.  Ceria alumina composites have been developed to aid the oxidation of coke.
