A highly porous NiMoS2/Clay catalyst with large specific surface area was synthesized using non-ionic surfactants for syngas to ethanol synthesis. Samples prepared without surfactant exhibited large agglomerates of NiMoS2 particles. Introduction of a surfactant into clay structure resulted in well-dispersed NiMoS2 particles within the exfoliated silicate framework.
