The carbonylation of dimethyl ether to methyl acetate over Mordenite was investigated experimentally and by detailed DFT calculations. DFT calculations show that ketene is a reaction intermediate which was verified experimentally by the observation of doubly deuterated acetic acid, when D2O is introduced in the feed during the carbonylation reaction.
