A systematic DFT study of the mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation by two structurally related Ru pincer catalysts allowed to identify the key factors underlying the striking differences in their catalytic performance. The obtained knowledge was utilized to boost the performance of these systems towards unprecedented reaction rates.
