Through a thorough connection between theory and experiment, we determined that the nature of the enhanced hydrodeoxygenation capability observed in the Pd/Fe bimetallic surfaces is caused by a combination of Fe’s high C-O cleavage activity and Pd’s ability to stabilize metallic Fe, protecting the surface from deactivation via oxidation.
