The study of C2-C4 alcohol dehydration on γ-Al2O3 at 488 K shows the distinct site requirements for parallel dehydration reactions, the involvement of dimeric and trimeric surface adsorbate species that inhibit observed rates, and effects of carbon chain length and substitution in determining selectivity and rates for parallel dehydration pathways.
