Stable Au/ceria catalysts were developed for CO and water-gas-shift reaction. Au particles with sizes of 2-4 nm strongly anchored onto rod-shaped CeO2 by buried interfacial bonding. Atomic resolution E-TEM and aberration-corrected STEM were used to characterize the catalysts. A new model was proposed to explain the observed phenomena
