Carbonaceous deposits formed during alkane isomerization on H-mordenite at temperatures below ~50 K are identified as methyl-substituted cyclopentenyl species by in situ UV–vis and IR spectroscopies. Methyl-substituted acenes are formed from these precursors at temperatures higher than 550 K.
