The reaction of carbon with steam to produce synthesis gas is an important energy related processes..  The reaction is an energy intensive one requiring termperatures around 1000 °C.  Carbon sources are microwave absorbing and microwaves can produce synthesis gas rapidly at temperatures well below what can be obtained thermally.
