Measured rates and selectivities were combined with DFT calculations in order to elucidate the mechanism of CO activation as well C-C bond formation during Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on Ru catalysts. Results showed that CO activation proceeds with the assistance of chemisorbed H* instead of direct dissociation at a vicinal vacant site.
