Alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been used to influence selectivity and activity of supported metal catalysts. Alkanethiol coatings on Pd/Al₂O₃ catalysts have been used to direct the hydrogenation selectivity of fatty acids and coated Pt/Al₂O₃ catalysts have been used to direct the selectivity of α,β-unsaturated aldehyde hydrogenation.
