One-pot synthesis of mesoporous silicas (MSM) in the presence of bis-[3-(triethoxysilyl) propyl] tetrasulfide (TESPTS) was optimized to formulate highly active and 100% selective Au/MSM catalysts converting lactose to lactobionic acid.

Au/MSM catalysts synthesized with TESPTS concentrations of 6 to10% exhibited the highest catalytic activity (100% lactose conversion, after 120 min).
