Deoxygenation and decarbonylation mechanisms of furfural and selectivity control via rational catalyst design are investigated. TPD, HREELS and DFT calculations are used to elucidate adsorption and reaction pathways on Pd catalysts and determine effect of adsorption orientation. Hydrodeoxygenation selectivity is altered by introducing surface modifiers such as alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers.
