Hydrothermal aging deactivated a Pd/SiO2 catalyst used for CH4 oxidation. A small decrease in surface area and no significant change in PdO crystallite size after hydrothermal aging suggests that the occlusion of PdO clusters by the SiO2 support plays a key role in catalyst deactivation during hydrothermal aging.
