Carbon monoxide affects the MTH reaction selectivity and incorporates into the hydrocarbon pool and reaction products.  In absence of C-C bond bearing feed or catalyst contaminants, the first carbon-carbon bond formation in the MTH reaction could be initiated intrinsically by carbon monoxide generated from methanol decomposition over the catalyst.
