Sub-nanometer Au-(OH)x species on various oxide supports have emerged as the active sites for the water-gas shift and methanol steam reforming reactions. Alkali addition has been found to stabilize sub-nm Pt-(OH)x species and render them active  for these reactions even on inert silica. Are these single-site metal catalysts at work?
