Nanoscale ceria suitably modified with low-content gold has been identified as a promising new catalyst for methanol steam reforming. Mechanistic differences in the reaction pathway between groups VIII (Pt, Pd) and IB (Au) metals supported on ceria were identified; the latter system following the methylformate- formic acid- H2 pathway.
