Triglyceride hydrogenation was performed using noble metal, base metal, and carbide electrocatalysts in a novel electrochemical reactor, similar to a PEM fuel cell. Mechanistic studies suggest that surface hydrogen involved in this reaction was generated electrochemically, while the hydrogenation step proceeded via a thermochemical route.
