An important obstacle limiting the efficiency of semiconductor photoelectrocatalysts is the high recombination rate of bulk charge carriers. We show that the addition of plasmon active Ag nanoparticles to a semiconductor selectively enhances the production of charge carriers near the semiconductor surface, thereby increasing the water splitting reaction rate.
