Water adsorbed on γ-Al2O3 stabilizes (Al,O) Lewis acid-base pairs and makes them more reactive towards C-H bond dissociation. Optimal water coverage is reached at a pre-treatment temperature of 700 °C. Our findings clearly illustrate the importance of a controlled thermal pre-treatment step for the preparation of supports and catalysts.
