The combination between experiment and theory provides mechanistic insights in the catalytic transformation of glycerol on Rhodium in basic conditions, showing that the initial step is dehydrogenation leading to glyceraldehyde. Assistance by a neighboring alcohol function facilitates the OH activation step.
