Metallic gold species and Au-Pd alloys are mainly responsible for activation of arabinose while an easy redox transformation of Pd species can provoke oxygen activation. Thus, core-shell structures formed by gold species or Au-Pd alloy covered with PdO film manifest synergetic effect in the selective arabinose oxidation by molecular oxygen.
