O2 is activated on MgO/Ag(100) whereas CO is only weakly bonded. These adsorption properties together with a low activation barrier render the MgO/Ag(100) system an efficient catalyst for CO oxidation at low temperatures. The predicted mechanism is general and may have implications for a range of oxidation reactions.
