In order to use hematite as a photo-catalyst for the production of hydrogen from water, its short diffusion length of electron/hole pairs must be overcome.  We hypothesize that surface plasmons, which create electron/hole pairs near the surface of the semiconductor material, greatly enhance the rate of the water splitting reaction.
