Our work demonstrates a step forward in analysis of size effects and reaction pathway kinetics in hydrogenation of α, β–unsaturated aldehydes to unsaturated alcohols. Beyond, the application at hand, selective hydrogenation of C=O functionalities over C=C bonds is of potential importance to hydrodeoxygenation reactions in the upgrading of biomass derivatives.
