A structured macroporous cathode catalyst layer of a PEM fuel cell is introduced and optimized to achieve the highest yield with minimum usage of platinum. Through this method, the effective electrochemical reaction yield is increased nearly 4-fold over a strictly nanoporous cathode catalyst layer.
