Co/MgO catalysts have been investigated by Chemical Transient Kinetics (CTK) in the CO hydrogenation reaction (Fischer-Tropsch). Gaseous CO rather than a CHx surface species is involved in hydrocarbon chain growth. The catalytic surfaces at reaction steady-state are “crowded” with C, O and H atoms (most probably associated as surface complexes).
