MgAl layered double hydroxides were calcined and rehydrated under H2O/N2 flow at 80 °C. Reconstruction is nearly completed in only 0.5 h. Thus obtained meixnerite catalysts possess strong Brönsted basic sites, as judged by CDCl3 adsorption. Catalysts were highly active for the cyanoethylation of alcohols, an industrially important reaction.
