This work presents a single-step procedure for synthesizing sulfonated carbonaceous materials based on hydrothermal carbonization of residual monosaccharides from lignocellulosic biomass. It was seen that they are composed of well-defined carbon microspheres with high activity for xilose dehydration, which steadily increases along with sulfur content, and potential production of furfural.
