Calix[4]arenes have been used as catalysts for the Al mediated MPV reduction. A comparative study of stereoelectronic & hyperconjugative requirements of the calixarene scaffold and reactants is conducted. The most sensitive and unexpected feature appears to be two-point binding of ketone to the metal center by virtue of Cl substituents.
