		This work shows that a zeolite-based catalyst can operate at low pH, high salt aqueous environment to give efficient conversion of glucose to HMF, which is a crucial step toward the establishment of biomass-based chemical platforms. This is the first example of a zeolite-based catalyst to function in that manner.
