Production of fermentable sugars from biomass offers a potential route to renewable fuels. This contribution describes the synthesis, characterization, and activity of acid-functionalized nanoparticles for hydrolysis of sucrose. Acid-functionalized nanoparticles offer significant potential because a magnetic core offers easy separation while strong acid ligands catalyze hydrolysis.
