Co(III) complexes of quasi-planar, L2X2 ligands such as salen, salphen and porphyrin provide for a new route to the regioselective ring-opening of 1,2-epoxides with high activity and yield.  The nature of the ligand, counterion, and catalyst structure (unsupported vs. supported) all have a critical impact on the catalytic properties.
